SIMO Archives

Over 30 years SIMO has prepared numerous submissions, technical reports and letters for all tiers of government regarding the protection of Stradbroke's natural recourses. Along with some of those documents, we also publish here some of the papers and reports relating to the island prepared by other environmental orgnisations, university research groups , consultants and government agencies.

We will add to these from time to time.

‘Cylinder Beach Master Plan: Community Workshop Transcription of Workshop Results’

Sarkissian Associates Planners, 22 January 2003

The Community Workshop held at Point Lookout in 2002 to discuss the planning of Cylinder Beach was well attended. The transcript is a raw record of the event. Under discussion was a proposed a coach turnaround and car park to occupy the littoral zone of the beach. Community views about this split roughly 101 against the coach turnaround and car parking (and for a shuttle bus service), as against 16 who voted for the coach turnaround and car parking behind the beach. Redland Shire Council approved the scheme. It has not been built. Cylinder Beach is within the Heritage-listed Reserve. (1.2MB)

‘Assessment of Recreational Off-Road Vehicle (ORV) Impacts on North Stradbroke Island’

Thomas A Schlacher PhD (University of the Sunshine Coast) ed; contributing authors: Luke Thompson BSc(Hons) (U Sunshine Coast), Thomas A Schlacher, Sam Price, BSc (U Sunshine Coast); Final Report, prepared for Redland Shire Council, June 2006

The report is on the ecological Health of North Stradbroke Island’s Sandy Beaches, Phase 1 Pilot studies on 4WD vehicle effects (Jan-June 2006). It summarises findings of three pilot studies into the impacts of 4WDs on island beaches, undertaken by the Marine Science Group of the University of the Sunshine Coast. 4WDs ‘can cause significant environmental harm to organisms inhabiting the sandy shores’. Comprehensive local data are lacking, making it difficult to make a clear assessment of impacts. However, the report finds that 4WDs on beaches need to be managed, since their impacts include significant physical disturbance of faunal habitat and tidal fauna, and crushing of ghost crabs and crabs buried shallow into the sand.
