Welcome to SIMO and North Stradbroke Island SIMO is the principal environmental group on North Stradbroke Island, which lies off the coast from Brisbane, Australia. The Stradbroke Island Management Organisation was formed in 1978 from a grassroots community campaign to stop a proposed bridge from the mainland. For more than 30 years SIMO has been active in fighting to maintain the island’s natural environment and low-key coastal village character and community. SIMO’s members share the commitment to ensure the environmentally sustainable management of the island’s flora, fauna, minerals, water and National Park areas, current and future. We have many stories to tell about Stradbroke's natural and social history, and over 30 years’ worth of SIMO archives to delve into, as well as our current work in fighting to preserve the island's natural environment and to ensure better outcomes from development, sand mining and tourism. We invite you to return again and again as we progressively add more material to the site. SIMO: winner of Redland City Council 2009 Australia Day Environmental Award |
